When you build a website, you need a map or guide. You need the non-techie’s roadmap to website success.
If you’re driving to a place you’ve never been to, you might use some technology to help you. You could enter the address in the navigation system of your car. Or use Google Maps from your smartphone or desktop. Of course, there are the old-fashioned methods – using a paper map or asking someone!
Whatever method you use, you must find a map to figure out how to reach your destination and get there most efficiently. Otherwise, you would easily get lost at some point or spend too much time getting to your destination.
The same can be said about building a website. You should first find a road map to achieve your goal without wasting unnecessary time! Here is one example of how mapping out your plan BEFORE building a website could save you time, money, and frustration.
What’s the Purpose of Your Website?
A website can do a variety of things. You can show off your services/products. Or you can set it up as a place where people can purchase your stuff. A website can be a place where they can contact you.
In most cases, you want your website as a place where your visitors can TAKE ACTION. Here are some examples of “actions”:
- Signing up for a newsletter
- Purchasing your products/services
- Contacting you for a free discovery consultation
- Engaging in a conversation via blog comments
- Clicking on an advertisement
- etc…
Whatever action you want your website visitors to take should be your main focus during the website design process. Otherwise, you’ll get a website that doesn’t accomplish your goals after spending lots of time and money.
The above is just one of many things you want to work on during the website planning stage.
To save you from wasting hours of your life (and a few headaches as well), I’d like to share with you the simple roadmap I developed and personally use whenever I develop a new website!
