The start of a new year is always a busy and exciting time. It brings hope, optimism, goals, resolutions, new plans, and ideas. As we put to rest 2022, we can look forward with high expectations for the year to come.
If you’re a business owner, there’s a lot to do to wrap up the year and plan for the next. It’s important to get your year started off on the right foot: meeting your goals and pursuing new ideas. What’s the best way to ensure those things happen? I say it’s prioritizing scheduling and your calendar.
Why Are Calendars So Important?
Recently, I was reading a book that mentioned decision fatigue. Our brain gets tired from making so many decisions each day, even small decisions like “what should I eat for lunch?” or “what should I do with this email?” Decision fatigue can sabotage our well-intentioned goals, plans, and tasks. How many times have you sat down at your computer and thought “What do I do now?” or “What’s the most important task that I should get done today?”
Calendars are one of the top tools that can help us avoid decision fatigue. When something is written/typed on our calendar, it’s established. We don’t have to think about whether or not we’re going to do it. We have time blocked out and we’ve prioritized it by giving it a set time and place in our busy lives.
The bottom line is, if you want something to happen, putting it on a calendar will serve you well. Here are some additional reasons why calendars are important in your business and personal life:
- Help you to meet deadlines
- Enable you to be more productive
- Avoid scheduling conflicts and double booking
- Help you prioritize events, appointments, and activities
- Facilitate better communication between business team members
Paper vs. Digital Calendars
Paper planners have value! They’re tangible, pretty, and fun, and for many people, the process of writing something on paper helps them to solidify it. We don’t have to look at a screen to know what’s going on.
However, paper planners also have serious limitations for small businesses. For a long time, I used a day planner. One year, my best friend lost her day planner, along with all the appointments, contact information, plans, ideas, and to-do lists that were inside. From that day on, I was determined not to have that happen to me, and so I started using a digital calendar.
The other important thing about the benefit of a digital calendar, is that you can access it from any device anywhere! In the past forgetting to bring you paper calendar to a networking event, for example, always turned out to be cumbersome, and resulted in lost business.
Though there are lots of fancy calendar tools and apps, my favorite digital calendar tool is still Google Calendar! I use it daily in my business and personal life. I cannot tell you how important it’s been in helping me grow a successful online business.
My Favorite Features of Google Calendar
1) Simple, but Powerful
While simple to use, it also has features that allow for more complex planning. It’s similar to WordPress in that way. You can use the features that work for you, and not worry about the rest.
2) Easily Accessible
Another reason I love Google Calendar is that it’s stored online (in the “cloud”). You can update your calendar from your desktop, your laptop, or your mobile phone. Download the app on your iPhone or Droid and view your calendar from wherever you are. This makes it easy to review your day or week in the morning or while you’re running errands. Digital calendars even work when you’re on an airplane with no data or wifi connection. Now you won’t have to worry about losing or misplacing a paper planner (like I did one year).
3) Multiple Colored Calendars
Finally, the multiple calendars feature helps me organize all the moving parts of my life. You can set up as many calendars as you want – business, personal, team projects, editorial, appointments, training, etc. Then, change the setting to view all or just a few of these calendars. Plus, you can select certain calendars to share with team members and family.
4) And it’s Free!
Google Calendar is part of the Google Suite, and they’re all free to use with a Google Account.
