Have you ever heard the term “Vanity URL” and wondered what it means?

When you run a business, branding matters. You carefully choose your logo, colors, message, and website design. But many business owners overlook one important detail – their links. Your URLs are part of your brand, too!

A Vanity URL is a short, clean, easy-to-remember custom web address. Instead of a long string of random numbers and letters, you create a link that reflects your business name or message.

It looks more professional. It’s easier to share. And it builds trust.

Vanity URLs for Your Social Media Profile Pages

When you first create a business page on Facebook, you may be assigned a long link filled with numbers. That kind of link is hard to remember and not something you would want to print on a business card.

Fortunately, most social media platforms allow you to customize your profile URL. This includes Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, and X.

Instead of a random link, you can often change it to something like: yourplatform.com/yourbusinessname

That small change makes a big difference. It looks polished and reinforces your brand every time someone sees it. Each platform has its own rules about how and when you can change your username, so be sure to choose carefully. For example, my Facebook business page Vanity URL is this: https://www.facebook.com/christinahillsbiz/
(My personal profile is this: https://www.facebook.com/christinahills, and you can follow me there too)

Why Vanity URLs Matter for Small Business Owners

If you are a coach, consultant, healer, or service provider, you share links regularly. They show up in your email signature, newsletters, social media posts, podcasts, webinars, and printed materials.

A vanity URL:

  • Makes your business look more professional
  • Is easier for people to remember
  • Builds trust because it looks intentional
  • Is simpler to say out loud on a podcast or video
  • Reinforces your brand name

It may seem like a small detail, but small details add up.

How to Set Up Your Vanity URL

Most social media platforms allow you to customize your profile URL. The exact steps may change over time, but here is where you generally go to update your username or public link.

Keep in mind that each platform has its own rules. Some limit how often you can change your username. Others require your page to meet specific criteria before you can customize your URL. Always double-check the platform’s current help section before making changes.

Vanity URLs vs Pretty Links

Pretty links and Vanity URLs are similar, but they serve different purposes.

Pretty links help people get where you want them to go without long, ugly links.  Vanity URLs usually point to you and help people find you. It commonly links to your social media profiles (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc).

When used strategically, vanity URLs support visibility and branding, while pretty links provide reliable, professional links to meetings, resources, and recommendations.
