You may be asking yourself that very same question: Should you get an iPad?
Well first off, for the folks that have not been watching the media, the iPad is the hottest new thing to hit mobile marketing. It’s like an iPhone/iPod Touch but just bigger. Everyone I know with an iPhone, understands the importance of this new device and wants one badly! (or has already gone out to buy one). Watch this quick little video from Apple…
So why is this relevant to you?
Well the significance of the iPad, is that we are all becoming more and more mobile. No longer does a person need to “wait till they get back to their office”, now you can be running your business on the go. (My friend Paul Colligan, spent a month running his business on his iPad exclusively).
Well with using WordPress as your platform for your website, you CAN run your business from anywhere. WordPress is designed for the person on the go, using multiple computers, logging in from anywhere. It’s that flexible. (unlike the old Dreamweaver days, where you were stuck to one computer. Or had to buy extra software and install it on your other computers just to share your data with a collaborator. Ugh, too much work)
So if you want an iPad, go for it and get one! You’ll be able to add posts and pages to your WordPress Website, update your website, and do pretty much anything you need to, all without the reliance on a webmaster.

Christina,
I love my iPad and use WordPress myself and for all my clients, but the WP iPad app really sucks. You can’t use the visual editor at all, for example.
Newt,
I’ll have to check that out! But you always have the browser version.
I prefer the browser version of editing my WordPress site on my iPhone anyways
There is a free Word Press iPhone plugin that should work with the iPad – that allows one to post to Pages, Posts and Comments. The iPad could be very useful to many people for a lot of things – sort of like an iPhone with a larger more readable screen. Something recently learned from a friends experience. The iPad is slippery – if dropped it can break the screen. The Apple warranty does not cover breakage, Apple care does not either (look elsewhere for a warranty). Apple will replace a broken iPad but it will cost you about half of what you paid (same is true with iPod touch and iPhone). Square Trade has a warranty that covers just about everything except loss or theft (including system failures) at a reasonable cost. Also while the Apple iPad is really a great device the Apple case is not very good, look elsewhere for a case. You might also want to check out the Silicon cases that give you a better grip on the iPad. I use one from incase on my iPhone which is also slippery and easy to slip out of your hands.
Ronald,
Great comment about the iPad being slippery. That is how I found my iPhone to be, so I immediately got a case for it.
Christina – helpful little video. It is soo tempting, but I can’t make a case for it at the moment as I’m working pretty much in one place. I can dream on…..
Caroline,
I’m tempted every day! I got a little Netbook, but am not finding it as useful as I wanted because it’s so slowwwww…
I agree about the netbook. My girlfriend got one and I could smash it everytime she asks for help with the darn thing.
I’ll be waiting for the new Android netbooks to come out. They’ll be touch screens but will also have a USB input. Heck, my Droid phone has a USB input. Why wouldn’t the Ipad? Plus, there will be many Android netbooks to pick from, not just one in the case of the Ipad.
Same thing with the Iphone and Android phones. In the US market right now, there are something like 20 different Android phones supported by 5 or 6 different carriers. With the Iphone OS, there is one phone, one carrier…
Yes this race for who has the best mobile device is quite interesting. I know lots of folks with the Android. I myself am an Apple lover..
😉
I guess it’s just a never ending competition to see who can invent the most portable device that also has the most control over the cyber/electro-magnetic world plus can execute the most applications the most efficiently.
Joseph,
Yep, that’s just it!
Then it gets more interesting (annoying) that Apple and Adobe are in a big fight over the video players.
iPhones and iPads WON’T play flash video! So now biz owners (like me) have to come up with another way to have our videos play on those devices.
iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch support HTML 5 – H.264 -MP4 AVC video. Not only does Apple support HTML 5. Microsoft recently announced HTML 5 support and put it in the latest version of Internet Explorer. HTML 5 is quickly becoming the standard for video. HTML5 is beginning to be used by major news and media sources, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5_video
Thing to know is the iPhone has more than half of the Smart Phone market, the iPad has already sold over 1 million and that is in the US – the iPad is just starting to appear on the international market.
Apple does not support Flash on portable devices for some very good reasons. Microsoft is moving away from Flash also. So that just means if we do internet video we all need to begin to explore ways to make the videos available and playable on the most popular portable devices. (You Tube videos play just fine on iPhones, and iPads) HTML5 / H.264 are also fine. This all is just a change and tech advancement.
Flash is a gigantic security problem so, ultimately, what Ronald Headley mentioned about HTML 5 as a replacement, and YouTube) is good news. Painful, but good 🙂
I got the iPad for my birthday as something I did not need. It turns out i use it every day, just about as much as I use my iPhone. I totally love it and am typing this comment on it at my kitchen table.
I also love the Apple iPad case. It is perfect, light weight, portfolio style, stiff front cover, sticky feel and a adjustable stand built in. I never take off the case. My son and I both have the iPad and the apple case and totally love it.
At first i missed flash, yet slowly sites are using HTML 5 instead so most videos are now who wing up fine.
My main problem is that I have too many passwords to remember, so i need a good iPad password manager.
It was great to meet you at Mass Control last year.
Clay
Clay,
Yes we have been looking into HTML 5 as we feel that is the way the web is going to go with video. Currently all my stuff is in flash now. I too want a good password manager for my Apple devices. Let me know if you find one!
-Christina
p.s. I should be at List Control this year too!
I am using roboborm for the Mac and iPad. It does not meet my needs on the iPad. It is ok on the Mac and awesome on the PC. I plan to get 1password for the Mac this week. I will send you a tweet if it is better than Roboform.
List control will be awesome, I am not going this year.
There is an app for that
http://www.roboform.com/iphone.html
Ronald,
I love that you know so much about technology!
🙂
Thanks – I really like that you know so much about Word Press and other techie things and how to teach it.
BTW June 7-11 is Apple WWDC and there should be some new product announcements in Steve Jobs keynote speech. (June 7 – 10AM PST) There will be live blogs from MacWorld and MacLife. This is one of the main events that Apple announces new products.
One of the main things (for internet marketers) is Apple is NOT going to allow Flash on Mobile devices. They are supporting HTML5 and h.264 for video. Microsoft is also supporting HTML5 and h.264 – with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad dominating the mobile market that means we all need to get serious about HTML5 h.264 for marketing videos. Major news outlets are beginning to use HTML5 so their videos are visible and play on Apple mobile devices
Also found a plug in that is interesting –
WPtouch iPhone Theme
This allows Word Press sites to be seen on Apple mobile products without messing up your normal theme. I have it on http://www.yardgardenwindmills.com/blog go there with your iPhone or iPod touch to see what it does – it is a WP theme – there is nothing to know or download to the Apple device other than a place to turn it on when you go to a site with the plug in working – it will say mobile theme with an on / off button.
There are a number of settings in the plug in to better enable people coming to your site from an Apple mobile device.
How much fun is that! Looks good! I need one . . .
Ipad works especially if I’m mobile but for a multi-tasking gadget and needed in-depth work, I would prefer a laptop.
I think if they can add more features which will make it more of a computer, I would consider it more.
I am going to buy an Ipad in the next week or so. I know there are different price points with the different models. Any suggestions in the arena? Just don’t want to regret down the road not getting something more powerful, however will just be using it for general business use, etc.!!
Thanks in advance!
Anita
Anita,
the best thing to do is to talk to the folks at the Apple store. I personally would get the cheaper one and save the money. It all depends if you need the 3G or not. So that depends upon where you will be when you will be using your iPad most of the time.
If you are within a good wireless network, you should not need the 3G. But talk to the apple folks
Basically there are two different iPad models. The first is the iPad – it can “talk” to the internet only by using WiFi – that means you will need to be someplace where WiFi is available to use it. Are you at places that have WiFi a lot?? (do you have WiFi at home, at work, at the office, do you often go to hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, air ports, book stores, hospitals and or other places that have WiFi?? Remember WiFi works about 300 feet from the transmitter.
The next iPad is the iPad 3G – it is just like the iPad above it can use WiFi the added part to this one is the ability to use the AT&T 3G network. 3G is wireless that works through cell phone towers. First question is this – does 3G work where you will be using the iPad?? Is it available. 3G is available in most major cities and along much of the interstate system. In many areas what this means is that if your are 3 or 4 miles from the Interstate 3G will not work.
The way to tell is find someone with an iPhone 3G and have them check the areas where you are most of the time to see if they can get connected to AT&T at 3G speeds. AT&T has two data systems Edge which is available both urban and rural – Edge is very slow, it is really not a lot faster than dial up. It does work as long as you are not doing a lot of data. You can sort of tell and the first thing to do is check the coverage maps on the AT&T site for your area. Be sure to use the AT&T coverage viewer http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer – put in your zip code – it will bring up a map in tones of orange. Next click on the box (Blue “Show 3G Coverage”) zoom out on the view – if your area or where you will be using the iPad has a lot of blue then you really should consider the iPad 3G – the main advantage is you can connect to AT&T 3G cellular – that means you will have internet in places where WiFi is not available – (like your car, the park, on the street, and on and on.)
AT&T just dropped the $30 unlimited data plan for the iPad (and new iPhone) they have a $25 plan which gives 2G of data and $15 which gives 250 MB here is an article about the “new” AT&T plans for the iPad
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/02/candid-answers-from-atandt-on-the-new-iphone-data-plans/
BTW http://www.tuaw.com/ is a great place for information about the iPad, iPod, iPhone, and other Apple products
Next up with the iPad is what size – they come in three sizes – 16G 32G and 64G
People experienced with the iPhone and who use them a lot quickly found that 16G is just not large enough. On the other end not many people are using all of the 64G on the top model. The sweet spot seems to be 32G – in fact the brand new iPhone 4 announced yesterday only comes in 16G and 32G which means that the 64G has been dropped. (that has to mean with the iPhone the 64G model was not selling enough.)
So at least to me the 32G iPad 3G is the one that makes a lot of sense. While I do have WiFi both at home and at the store – I find my self in a lot of places using my iPhone on 3G. For me the ability to be able to choose is important with my iPhone and will be important when I get an iPad. Often WiFi is not open and this is getting more and more so. To use it you need access and not everywhere has open WiFi. Of course 3G is not available everywhere either. So at least with the iPhone I use a combination of 3G and WiFi and between the two I usually am able to have Internet access where ever I am – even if that means finding a place with WiFi where 3G is not available.
I also find that in places where only EDGE is available – rather than deal with the slowness, I will head for a WiFi hotspot like the Golden Arches, or Expensive Coffee places. (a note – if you are an AT&T customer you do have free access to all of the AT&T WiFi hot spots.)
Something to be aware of with the iPad and iPhone is the Apple Care warranty which is normally excellent for Apple Products DOES NOT COVER dropping and breaking it. If you break an iPad or iPhone you will end up paying about half of what you paid for a new one. Square Trade – (a really good company to deal with) has a warranty that does cover fixing the iPad if something electronic goes wrong AND they cover it if you drop and break it. http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/ they have “specials” so watch their site.
I was recently at Word Camp & there was a person there using the iPad on battery only for 8 hours!
Christine,
I’m amazed how many hours I get out of my iPad!
The new iPhone 4 is out today – (and so is the new OS for the iPhone 3GS and 3G – free download – be careful – up load your photos to a computer first – make certain you back up you iPhone before you upgrade – if you sync it with more than one computer back it up on every computer you use – make certain you are using the latest version of iTunes) Some early reviews are saying the new iPhone will loose signal bars if you are Left Handed – the phone antenna is the metal on the left side of the new case – sound like you can short out the antenna with your hand – the fix is easy just put a bumper on it- a case or bumper is a good idea anyway – iPhone are slippery – it they fall to the floor you can break the screen and Apple warranty and Apple Care does not cover dropping and breaking it. (Square Trade covers electronic failures AND breakage — here is a really long link http://view.exacttarget.squaretrade.com/?j=fe61177176620c7d751d&m=feff1076706504&ls=fdf111717c6c0779751d7577&l=fe6615717060057d7212&s=fe2b16737563067f721079&jb=ffcf14&ju=fe30167676640575701476
or you can just go to http://www.squaretrade.com
less cost than Apple Care – better coverage
Ronald,
I just ordered my free iPhone 4 case from apple.
Yes it’s a slippery one
There is an iSO upgrade coming in a few days that effects the iPhone and iPod touch AND a major iSO upgrade coming in November for the iPad – most of the new stuff for the phones will be on the iPad and they are adding PRINTING!!!! You can watch the video on http://www.apple.com and I have some on the announcements on my blog
http://www.etechnstuff.com/ebay-drop-off/
Working on a new site – at the moment
http://www.yardgardenwindmills.com
will be playing with an eCommerce plug in and attempting to put some products up this evening.
I am actually waiting a bit on the iPad – I am betting that the next model will have some added features – it should be out in January. Hoping they put at least a front facing camera on it – they are doing so much with Face Time that it just seems the iPad will get that upgrade. There also are a lot of rumors of a smaller iPad – perhaps a 7in screen.
Best place for Apple information if you have an iPhone (or iPod touch) is TUAW app or just go to http://www.tuaw.com (The Unofficial Apple Weblog)
Wow, what a great read, Ronald Headley gave us an ebook in his comments, all very helpful.
I have been holding off on getting an ipad, now I hear that we will have 4G starting the first of the year and that verizon is hooking up with apple to handle the ipad. If this is the case, it will be great, my verizon phone works 99.9 percent of where ever I go, It also works just fine in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, which is my other home. If they do start handling ipad, I’ll be first in line,.
Thanks for all the information..
William,
Yes Ronald is a wealth of knowledge! I’m so happy that he is one of my students in the Website Creation Workshop!
I love my iPad, but I’d wait till the 4G came out if I were you. There are some things I don’t like about it, and that always happens with a first generation device.
First off, I’m a PC guy, but a month ago I bought a iPad and it’s the best tech purchase of my life!!! I use the Kindle app (sold my Kindle) for books, Audible for audio books, and a RSS reader called Pulse to keep up on the two dozen blogs that I try to keep up with. I watch movies, TV and read newspapers and magazines (Zinio’s great). I have also found a great notetaking app and a stylus that makes the iPad great for taking notes too.
I have even found a backup battery, the size of a deck of cards that gives me an additional 50 hours of operation.
It’s truly a wonderful device.
Larry,
I love my iPad too! I didn’t know about that backup battery. Great idea for camping trips!
😉
