Today I want to talk about a technique called ‘Forwarding URLs’. If you have a Facebook Fan page, you are going to want to create a ‘Forwarding URL’ for that. What is a ‘Forwarding URL’ you ask? Well it’s a domain name that you purchase, that forwards to another domain. It’s the easy way to tell people about your websites!
I have a forwarding URL for my Fan Page on Facebook. If you go to https://www.ChristinaHills.com/facebook you will then be redirected to httpd://www.facebook.com/pages/Christina-Hills/67923647824 or https://www.facebook.com/christinahillsbiz which is the pretty link for my Facebook Fan Page.
I have many other forwarding URLs in my biz. I say them on webinars because it’s much easier to say a simple URL on a webinar, than give a long URL with lots of slashes and numbers.
Here is how you do it
- Go to Godaddy or Bluehost ( www.ChristinasResources.com/bluehost ) (my link for Blue Host) any other domain registrar, and buy a domain name
- Inside your registrar account find where to set up domain forwarding (you can usually call on the phone and have Godaddy or BlueHost walk you through it)
- Forward your domain to the page you want people to go to. as in https://www.facebook.com/pages/Christina-Hills/67923647824
Oh and while you are there, Click the link to become a fan!
GoDaddy is offering Domain Name Registration (new domains only) for $0.99 for 1 year with code BUYCOM99. A good time to register!
thanks for that heads up on the domain registrations at godaddy!
Thanks for the heads up, Barry! Was thinking about buying a few domain names and will definitely have to take advantage of that discount. And thanks for the tip, Christina…I do have one forwarding URL that redirects to my website but hadn’t thought about doing that for my Facebook fan page. So thanks for that! 🙂
Thanks for the heads up on the discount. How long will it last? Need time to plan them out for the biggest bang for the buck.
This is the best price I have seen in ages.
Fantastic tip, Christina. I’d been aware that this forwarding was possible, but had not thought through how to put it to such good use. Thanks so much.
Yes, Facebook is an excellent use of the ‘Forwarding URL’ technique. But you can use it to send people to ANY domain name you want
Quick question- why would that URL be easier to remember http://www.facebook.com/yourbizname. You can get vanities set up for your fan pages and to me it would make more sense to send people to the site URL that is associated with what people remember most vs a unique URL that someone would be less likely to remember. In my head, the only thing I have to remember is that it is on facebook (already know that URL) and the name of the business or whatever I come up with that is easy to remember. Just seems like this is unnecessary. Thoughts?
Liz,
yes Vanity URLs for Facebook are great! I have one for my personal profile http://www.facebook.com/christinahills
but perhaps you want one for a Fan Page too, or you have multiple fan pages.
Or you might use this technique if you are doing a teleseminar with the Instant Teleseminar system (http://www.InstantTeleseminarQueen.com <-- my affiliate link for that service) So there are MANY different ways you might use a forwarding URL, not just for Facebook 🙂 Christina
Thanks for not getting all “big headed” with your answer- good answer!
Thanks for this tip Christina. Very useful. I also appreciate the GoDaddy coupon code from one of your readers.
Thanks Barry and Christina. Great tips!!
Once again you deliver the goods Christina..
Thanks for your consistent effort in delivering outstanding content.
Much Chi,
Terrence
Thanks, Christina, for this clear teaching on domain name forwarding.
A well organized and easy to understand lesson in a valuable concept, what more can one ask of a teacher. Best regards.
How do you create a FB photo that is larger with your advertising on it (like yours)?
Pia,
I had a graphic designer create that photo on my Facebook Fan Page http://www.ChristinaHillsOnFacebook.com and then just uploaded it like I would any other. Pretty simple.
🙂
I have 100 domains on Godaddy and i can say that this company is very reputable.”,:
Liam,
I know just having a few seems to add up to mega bucks. Getting special pricing for all those domains through GoDaddy?
Curious: Using all of these or just parked? Selling from them to justify expense.
Thanks.
carol
Yes, godaddy is a good company for buying domains. It is NOT a good place to get hosting and to host your WordPress websites.
A much better host (in my opinion) is Bluehost ( http://www.ChristinasResources.com/bluehost )
godaddy is not always the best registrar, the private registration of godaddy is too expensive `
