It’s a natural human tendency to want to put a face with a name or a voice. The same is true when we read or hear something online, whether it is an article, blog post, or podcast. We want to know “who is this person that’s talking to me?”

One of the things that can kill your business is not having a photo of yourself online. So many times, I see people on Facebook or elsewhere without a picture of themselves.

As silly as this may sound, it’s very important to have an image of yourself on the web, especially if you are doing business online.

Without a picture, you are not giving your audience an opportunity to match your words or voice with a face. Instead, they are left to wonder who you are, and they associate you with the “mystery man” image. And — I think this is also something that you should know — if you do not have a photo of yourself, people might even be seeing a different avatar associated with you instead.

You don’t want to be a Mystery Person, do you? Here are the downsides I see with this:

  • It makes you look like a spammer!
  • People are less likely to trust you because you are not showing who you are.
  • It doesn’t have any personality… Who would like to communicate with a faceless person?

If you don’t feel comfortable using your own photo, or if you don’t have a photo, then create a cartoon character of yourself!

This is called “Creating an Avatar”

You can create a cartoon character of yourself, and use that in place of your photo online.  This is important for social media profiles, and for the WordPress Gravatar image of yourself.

With WordPress, for example, if you post a comment to somebody’s blog post, it typically shows up with a Gravatar image like this:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter

But *if* you don’t have an image set up on Gravatar.com, the comment will show up with that generic “Mystery Person” image or another default image. But the most common Gravatar image is the “Mystery Person”.
