I have been teaching the Website Creation Workshop since 2008. Every time I teach an introductory webinar, one question always comes up: “Which should I choose: WordPress.com or WordPress.org?”

I completely understand why people get confused. Both platforms are created by the same company, Automattic, and both use the WordPress system to build websites. On the surface, they look very similar. But they are not the same at all!

A simple way to think about it is this: WordPress.com is managed and limited. WordPress.org is self-hosted, self-directed, and much more flexible. That difference matters a lot, especially if you are building a website for a business.

In my experience teaching hundreds of students, I strongly recommend WordPress.org for anyone who wants a serious, growing website.

Why Are There Two Versions of WordPress?

WordPress.com and WordPress.org were designed for different types of users. WordPress.com is built for simplicity. It handles everything for you, including hosting, updates, and security. You just sign up and start building.

WordPress.org is built for freedom. You choose your hosting company, install WordPress, and control your website yourself. It takes a little more setup, but you gain full ownership and flexibility.

Both can build a website, but only one gives you full control.

What They Have in Common

Even though they are different, WordPress.com and WordPress.org share some important features. Both of them:

  • Use the WordPress platform, which lets you create pages and blog posts and upload images.
  • Give you access to themes, which are design templates that control how your website looks.
  • Allow plugins, which add features like contact forms, email sign-ups, and online tools.
  • Have large online communities, so you can find help, tutorials, and support when needed.

Here are some critical differences you should know to make the right choice for you when building a website.

Comparison in Key Categories

1) Cost and Pricing Structure

WordPress.org software is free. You only pay for hosting and a domain name. These costs are usually affordable, and you can choose what fits your budget.

WordPress.com offers a free plan, but it is very limited. You will quickly run into restrictions unless you upgrade to a paid plan. As you upgrade, costs increase, and important features are still locked behind higher plans.

Why WordPress.org is better: You control your spending and are not forced into expensive upgrade plans.

2) Control Over Your Website

This is one of the biggest differences I teach in my Website Creation Workshop.

WordPress.org gives you full control. You decide everything, including design, features, and functionality. You can also add ads, affiliate links, or any tools you want without restrictions.

WordPress.com controls many parts of your website. Depending on your plan, you may not be able to install plugins, change advanced settings, or fully customize your site.

Why WordPress.org is better: Your website belongs to you, not the platform.

3)  Customization Options

WordPress.org gives you access to thousands of free and paid themes. You can also modify them in much greater depth. You are not stuck with limited design options. You can build a simple site, a blog, a business site, or even a complex online store.

In contrast, WordPress.com limits how much you can customize your site unless you upgrade to higher plans. Even then, you are still working within their rules.

Why WordPress.org is better: Your website can grow and change with your vision.

4) Plugins and Features

This is one of the biggest limitations I see students run into with WordPress.com. WordPress.com does not allow you to install most plugins unless you are on a higher paid plan. Instead, they only give you built-in features.

WordPress.org allows you to install any plugin you want. This includes tools for:

  • Email marketing
  • Contact forms and Opt-in Forms
  • Online stores
  • SEO (search engine optimization)
  • Security and Backups
  • Calendars and Scheduling tools

If you can think of a feature, there is probably a plugin for it.

Why WordPress.org is better: You are not limited by what the platform allows.

5) Making Money from Your Website

If you are a small business owner our entrepreneur, you are building a website to help you make money. WordPress.com places many limits on how you can earn money. This is huge! On the cheap plans, you cannot easily run ads, sell products, or use advanced monetization tools. Many features are locked unless you upgrade.

Good news! WordPress.org has no such restrictions. You have full freedom to build your business. You can sell products and services, create an online store, run ads, offer a membership program, accept payments, add affiliate links, and much more!

Why WordPress.org is better: There are no limits on how you grow your income.

Don’t Let “Self-Hosted” Scare You

Many people hear the term “self-hosted” and feel nervous. I see this often in my workshops, especially with non-techie business owners. But it is not as complicated as it sounds.

It simply means you rent space on a server from a hosting company. That is where your website lives. In this article, I share 10 Things to Ask Before Signing Up for Web Hosting

Think of it like this: you are building your own house instead of renting an apartment. You have more freedom with WordPress.org, even if there are a few more steps at the beginning.

Hosting Companies I Recommend

Here are some web hosting companies that I have had experience with and can recommend:

1) GreenGeeks

Final Thoughts

After teaching WordPress for almost 20 years, I can say with confidence that WordPress.org is the better choice for anyone building a real business or a long-term website. You can do so much more with WordPress.org, and more importantly, the site can keep growing with you and your business with a self-hosted site.

Yes, WordPress.org takes a little more setup in the beginning. But that small effort gives you long-term freedom, flexibility, and ownership over your website.

If you are ready to get started, join the next Website Creation Workshop, and I’ll walk you through the whole process!
