When someone visits your website, you want it to be as easy as possible for them to contact you. The more steps they have to take, the more likely they are to give up and move on.
If calling you is one of the main ways clients connect with your business, your website should make that process quick and simple. Instead of making people copy and type in your phone number, you can let them reach you with just one tap.
That small change can make a big difference in how many people actually contact you.
What is a Click-to-Call Button?
A Click-to-Call button (also called Tap-to-Call) is a simple link on your website that allows visitors to call you instantly.
When someone clicks or taps the link, their device opens its default calling app and asks if they want to place the call. Once they confirm, the number is dialed automatically.
It works on mobile devices and on desktops with calling apps installed. Instead of manually dialing, the user can connect with you in seconds.
The Click-to-Call feature is another way you can make your site more mobile-friendly. For more information about mobile-friendliness, check out “Simple Tools to Check How Your Site Looks on Mobile.”
Why is it Helpful?
A Click-to-Call button removes extra steps for your visitors. They don’t have to copy, paste, or remember your phone number. Everything is done in just a couple of taps.
This is especially important since many people browse websites on their phones. If something feels like too much work, they may leave before reaching out.
By making it easier to contact you, you improve the user experience and increase the chances that a visitor becomes a client.
Adding a Click-to-Call Link
Creating that link for your website is pretty simple, too. Here’s how to do so in WordPress. (The screenshots below were done in the Classic Editor, but the idea is the same with the Block Editor.)
We’ll use 800-555-1212 in this example:
- Type text you’d like people to add a Click-to-Call link to. For example, “Click here to call us.”
- Select the text you created above, and click on the Insert link button in the toolbar.
- For the link destination, type “tel:” followed by the phone number without dashes and save.

Publish the page and see how it looks and works on your desktop and mobile. It depends on your browser settings, too, but if you tap that link in your browser, it will most likely automatically launch your phone with the above number already ready to dial.
[Note on the phone number format and country codes]
It’s recommended to always use the international dialing format to create your click-to-call link: the plus sign (+), the country code, the area code, and the number. (Using “+” and “-” is not mandatory, but it helps with better auto-detection.) Check the international dialing format for your country, as there are some variations. (For a more complete list of country codes, go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_telephone_country_codes)
Examples:
tel:+1-858-609-9358
– In the above example, “+1” is the country code for many of the North American countries including the U.S.
tel:+64-3-123-4567
– In the above example, “+64” is the country code for New Zealand.

If you want to be a bit fancier, you might create a button or graphic and add a “tel:…” link to it, just like we did above. The idea is the same.

Final Thoughts…
When building a website, it’s easy to focus on colors, fonts, and layout. Those things matter, but they’re not the most important part. What really matters is how easy your site is to use for the people visiting it.
If a potential client is ready to reach out, your website should help them take that next step without any friction. The simpler you make it, the more likely they are to contact you.
That’s why small features like a Click-to-Call link can make such a big difference. It removes extra steps and gives your visitors a quick, direct way to connect with you.
So take a few minutes to add one to your site. It’s a simple change, but it can lead to more calls, more conversations, and more clients.
