While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both pretty much commercialized, they ended up triggering the birth of a day that’s all about GIVING. It’s called “#GivingTuesday.”

It’s the day when non-profits get most of their donations, and it’s a global movement!

“Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.”

Especially during the holiday season starting with Giving Tuesday, you are encouraged to give to the causes you support. It’s a great concept that reminds us of how wonderful the gift of giving can be.

History of #GivingTuesday

Giving Tuesday was first announced in 2012 by Mashable, a media and technology company and one of the Giving Tuesday founding partners. Other founding partners included Skype and Cisco, and more partners quickly joined this beautiful effort.

“Perhaps the greatest thing about #GivingTuesday is that it’s not a day focused on spreading awareness for one cause or raising money for one charity. The goal is to channel the giving spirit of the Holiday Season into a powerful day of action. This is about improving your community and taking action where you find it most needed.
– from Mashable’s “6 Inspiring Organizations Joining in #GivingTuesday

On the very first #GivingTuesday, the biggest donation processor Blackbaud reported in  USA Today that $10.1 million had been donated.

Since then, donations on #GivingTuesday have grown exponentially: in 2017, #GivingTuesday raised $274 million!
