Here is a short video that wordpress.org created to introduce the new features of WordPress 3.9:
The focus of this update is summarized in this phrase mentioned in the above video:
“Closing the Gap between Editing and Publishing”
The new features are meant to make it easy for you to see what the post/page would look like BEFORE publishing. Pretty cool!
Here are some of the highlights of the new features of WordPress 3.9:
1) Copy & paste content from Word without those messy hidden codes:
Doesn’t it drive you nuts that the look of the content sometimes gets all messed up when you copy text from Word into the WordPress editor? That’s because Word document has hidden styling codes that get picked up when you copy. With WordPress 3.9 editor, we should see much less of this (or none, I’m hoping!) as they improved their editor to fix this problem.
2) Improved Image Editing:
With WordPress 3.9, accessing the image edit screen is easier… You can even resize the image right in the post/page edit screen. No need to go into the media setup screen, and you can see how it looks in the post/page right away.
3) Drag and drop your images:
Many people loved it when WordPress introduced the “drop and upload” feature in the media area, and they took it further with WordPress 3.9. You can now drop the image right in the editor screen!
4) Preview gallery in the editor:
When you insert a gallery in a post/page, WordPress was was simply showing a gallery placeholder in the editor screen, and we couldn’t see what it would actually look like there. Until now. WordPress 3.9’s editor lets you see the actual photos in the gallery, making it easy for you to make necessary edits before you publish the post/page.
5) Audio and Vido Playlists:
Want to show off not only one audio/video, but in a form of playlists? You can do that with WordPress 3.9!
6) Header/Menu/Widget Preview:
You can now even preview the widget, menu, and header very easily before you make the actual changes.
Before you run out an update your site, you might want to wait until the first “dot” release comes out, i.e. 3.9.1. (That usually fixes any stray glitches that may be in the new software)

Does anyone know what the typeface is in this sample site ?’
“CHARLIE PARKER IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN” is an example of the type I have searching for for a long long time. It resembles ‘Gotham’ (only available through complicated licenses), or ‘Neutraface2’ (which is not available for web) .
It is also the Headers type on the http://www.TeslaMotors.com site.
Where do you see “Charlie Parker in the Public Domain”?
I’m not sure what you are looking at
It appears Sue is referring to the Post Title font, with “Charlie Parker…… ” best seen at 1:29 in the video.
Hi Sue,
That font appears to be Proxima Nova.
Hope that helps,
Michi
Yeah!
Thanks for figuring out that font
“CHARLIE PARKER IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN” is the large typeface title in the website screenshot with Part 6 above. (Also partly visible in Part 5. and the video).
Sorry if it was unclear! This looks like the type I have spent hours and hours searching for to use on our site, so if someone recognizes it and can identify it (hopefully a free font, but would consider paying), it would be great!
WP 3.9 looks like a useful update! I hope you approve it soon!
Cheers, Sue
Sue,
since this is a conversation about WP 3.9, not sure if anyone who knows fonts will see it. You might want to post your comment in a design forum with designers. I am not a font expert. Wish I had taken that course on typefaces in college 😉
Sue,
Just seeing that you’re hoping to find a free version. Try Montserrat – it’s a Google font you can also use on your site.
Looks like they have created some very good intuitive features that will allow for faster editing instead of going back and forth between Edit and View pages. I really like the new widget feature and being able to edit images in the Edit page.
Yes I love that the editing shows you what you will get, instead of the back and forth as you said. And being able to edit images in the edit page is MUCH easier! I’m just waiting for them to fix the border and padding issue. I believe they are going to come out with a plugin for that. So I’m waiting for the 3.9.1 version before I update
Wow, those are some really useful updates. Thank you!
Carol,
yes they have made a lot of improvements
So Christina:
Does this mean that as soon as I update to the latest version of WordPress, that I’ll have immediate access to all of this newer, and far more easier to use and navigate functionality?
Mark,
Yes you will get access to these new features when you update to 3.9
however, I generally wait until 3.9.1 comes out, so that the dust settles and the theme and plugin authors have a chance to catch up with the software, and any bugs will be worked out
This plugin solves the problem of WP 3.9 removing the image bordering and padding. Easy to use and it’s now right there when you edit an image
