Whenever a new WordPress version drops, I make it a point to dig in and share the most important updates with my students. In recent years, most of the improvements have centered on the Block Editor (Gutenberg). While those updates are valuable for many users, they haven’t always been relevant to the students in my community.
However, WordPress 7.0 “Armstrong”, named in honor of jazz musician Louis Armstrong, has a few helpful upgrades that apply to all WordPress users. So let’s dive into what’s actually new and what it means for you
Video Summary on Key Upgrades
In this video, I’ve summarized the most important new features that you’ll see with WordPress 7.0.
Three Practical Upgrades You Will Actually Notice
1) Your Dashboard Will Look Different
The WordPress admin dashboard is receiving its first significant visual overhaul since 2013. It’ll look more modern, have brighter colors, and may load faster.
The navigation, menus, and core screens are all in the same locations. You won’t have any trouble locating what you need – it’s just a more polished look. Think of it as a fresher, faster version of the same dashboard you already know.
2) Ctl-K Search Feature
The new Ctrl+K shortcut can be a handy little time-saver. Instead of clicking through multiple menus to find a specific page, post, or setting inside your WordPress dashboard, you can simply press Ctrl+K (or ⌘K on a Mac), type a word or two, and jump straight to what you are looking for.
3) Media Library Displays Image Titles
If you store a lot of images on your website, you may notice something different when you open your Media Library after updating to WordPress 7.0. Your image thumbnails will now display the image title as a text overlay directly on the photo. This was done to improve accessibility.

What Are the New AI Features?
If you go to Settings –> Connections inside your WordPress dashboard, you’ll be able to see where WordPress 7.0 can connect with external AI tools like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.
WordPress 7.0 is creating a better foundation so that AI tools and plugins can work more smoothly within WordPress, if you choose to use them. At this time, I don’t recommend that general WordPress users experiment with connecting to these AI tools.
An Important Technical Note: Your PHP Version
WordPress 7.0 requires a minimum PHP version of 7.4 and recommends PHP 8.3 or higher. PHP is a programming language that runs behind the scenes on your website. You never see it when you visit a page, but it is working in the background to run your website.
If your site is running an older version, you may not receive the 7.0 update or may encounter issues after updating.
It’s worth the time to call or chat with your hosting company to find out what PHP version your site is on and whether they can update it. Most reputable hosts will handle this for free in just a few minutes.
Before You Update, Back Up Your Site
Because this is a larger-than-usual update, it is always wise to back up your website before applying it. After updating, log in, click around, and make sure everything looks and works the way it should.
If you use any plugins that customize how your Posts or Pages screens look, those are worth checking in particular since the dashboard redesign is the area most likely to cause small compatibility hiccups.
Final Thoughts…
If you already know how to create pages, write blog posts, upload images, work with menus, and use the Classic Editor, those skills still apply. Your work inside WordPress will mostly stay the same.
Many of the WordPress 7.0 updates are behind-the-scenes improvements, such as faster speeds, smoother editing, cleaner code, and improved plugin compatibility. You will not update to WordPress 7.0 and suddenly feel lost.
It’s an exciting time! Technology is always evolving. Stay informed, experiment slowly, use the tools that genuinely help you, and continue building your skills one step at a time. At the end of the day, your creativity, your message, and your experience still matter far more than any AI tool ever will.
