Podcasting has been around for over 20 years and shows no signs of slowing down. As of 2025, approximately 55% of the U.S. population, around 158 million people, listens to podcasts monthly, and the global audience has surpassed 584 million listeners.

Everyone is probably familiar with a podcast by now – it’s like the old radio shows. A host talks about a specific subject, and episodes can run as long or short as you like. Many podcasters now also record video versions of their episodes, so YouTube has become the most popular podcast platform in the U.S. (used by roughly 33% of podcast listeners).

In this blog post, I’ll explain the steps and tools needed to add a podcast to your WordPress website.

Why Add Podcasting?

Does adding a podcast make sense for your business? There are many good reasons to try it:

More ways to reach your audience: Podcasting complements your website and blog by offering your content in a different format. Many podcasters repurpose existing blog content into episodes – create once, share in multiple ways.

Guests and conversations: Interviews and discussions between two people work especially well in audio format. You can bring fresh perspectives and expertise to your audience in an engaging, natural way.

Reach new audiences: Some people prefer listening over reading. A podcast can connect you with people who would never find your blog but are searching for topics in their podcast app.

Two Examples from my Students

Nowadays, you can find a podcast about almost any subject imaginable – true crime, food, homeschooling, sports, politics, fitness, and the list goes on.

One of my Website Creation Workshop students, Theresa Pilot, hosts a podcast where she discusses aviation topics. https://landingswithaflair.com/landings-with-a-flair-pilot-flight-training-podcast/.

Another student, Maria Lesetz, features a coaching podcast on her Color My Life Happy website. https://www.colormylifehappy.com/color-my-life-happy-podcast/.

Finally, Cindy Sullivan, a Website Creation Workshop student and creator of Food Sensitivity Kitchen, hosts a podcast with recipes and food ideas. https://foodsensitivitykitchen.com/podcast-episodes/

Planning for Your Podcast

Before you start recording, it’s worth thinking through a few key decisions:

  • What will your podcast be about?
  • How long will each episode run?
  • How often will you release new episodes?
  • What format works best – solo, interviews, scripted, or conversational?

Most importantly, get clear on the goal of your podcast. Planning each episode becomes much easier when you have a clear purpose. For example, Cindy’s podcast is built around a mission she states right in the introduction: to inspire home cooks to enable those they love to flourish.

A note on video: With YouTube now the top podcast platform, it’s worth considering whether you want to record video as well as audio. Even a simple webcam setup can help you reach a much wider audience on YouTube, while your audio-only version reaches listeners on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other apps.

Adding a Podcast to Your WordPress Website

Once you’ve planned your podcast, you’re ready to start recording and uploading to your website. There are several ways to insert a podcast into your website. Here’s the method that I have found simplest.

Step 1) Sign Up for a Podcast Hosting Service

A podcast hosting service stores your podcast files (ie. audio files for your podcast). It’s a separate service from your website hosting. Although it’s possible to host your podcast files on your website – you don’t want to go that route. It will eat up space in your media library and slow down your website.  A dedicated podcast hosting service will offer you and your listeners the best experience.

Here are some popular podcast hosting services to consider. These services also allow you to store your audio files and distribute your podcast across platforms such as YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.

Step 2) Record Your Podcast Episode

Thanks to new technology, you don’t need to hire an audio professional or purchase expensive equipment to record and edit a podcast. You start podcasting with your computer or smartphone and a headset or earphones. Down the road, you may choose to invest in better equipment or a podcast editor.

Step 3) Upload your Audio File to Your Podcast Hosting Service

Once you have recorded your podcast and your audio file is ready, upload it to your podcast hosting account.

Step 4) Add Your Podcast to a Page or Post

The easiest way is to use the embed code your hosting service provides. Most services (such as Buzzsprout, Podbean, and Libsyn) automatically generate an embed code for each episode.

To add it to your site, create or edit a page or post in WordPress, click the “Code” tab (rather than the Visual tab) in the editor, place your cursor where you want the podcast player to appear, and paste in the embed code. Then click back to the Visual tab to confirm it looks right, and publish or update your page.

Want to make things even easier? Many hosting services offer a free WordPress plugin that lets you insert episodes with just a couple of clicks, without using embed codes. Check your hosting provider’s website to see if they offer one. You can also consider a third-party plugin such as:

1) Podcast Player – Your Podcasting Companion
By Veda

This is a simple, highly-rated free plugin. To get started, you just enter your podcast’s RSS feed URL and the player will automatically load your episodes. It can be added to your site as a widget, shortcode, or editor block, making it a great no-fuss option for beginners who want a clean player without any ongoing costs. 2) Seriously Simple Podcasting
By Craig Hewitt

This is one of the most beginner-friendly options available and completely free. It automatically creates a podcast RSS feed that works with platforms like Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify. It works with any podcast hosting service, though it connects especially well with Castos hosting (starting at $19/month) if you choose to use it. And Boom! You have a podcast on your website!

Final Thoughts…

Listeners love podcasts because they are portable and easy to access. You can tune in while driving, walking the dog, doing housework, or exercising. For small business owners, adding a podcast is a great way to reach more people, build trust with your audience, and keep visitors coming back.

If you’re looking for another way to connect with your audience, try creating short, simple podcasts. You could find a new audience who isn’t interested in reading blogs or social media posts.
